and yet in the right place

There are situations for one. jungle residents who are like a death sentence. That seemed the Shuarindianer Humberto Tangamash in March 1976 as if a tree falling over him broke the thoracic spine. He lives since then with a high spinal cord injury. About half a year he was at that time in our HCJB - Hospital. All attempts to bring him then at least to a halt, failed miserably. He is bound to a wheelchair. That is, in his village that he did not even get to the river alone. And not only that: His first wife died of hepatitis, his second wife to cancer. Enough reason to quarrel with his fate. What these years, everything has gone right in this man, we can hardly imagine and yet Umberto discovered his life's work, which he tackles like no other of his tribe: the translation of the Bible especially the Old Testament in Shuar.
a few days each month is the translation team from different parts of the tribe together to take a missionary with the results together. Umberto is flown there. Again and again the work is interrupted by illness. The fact that he is still alive is a miracle. Such patients have frequent urinary tract infections or even kidney infections. Umberto lives without catheter and has learned to control stool and urine. For years, he has a sore on the buttocks, lately, a bone inflammation in the pelvis, we hardly get a grip. Again and again he landed in the hospital because of infection, even a suspicion of tuberculosis, now another unexplained fever. But he always comes with books, the show his entire bed. He knows all parts of the Bible by heart. He is of its Task enthusiastically. His children have left him, a neighbor takes care of him, brings him to the river to swim so that his muscles to stay fit. Often he is alone for days, get enough to eat, he should again play a huge meal at a time. He is malnourished. Also makes him vulnerable to disease. But his goal remains: will revise the Old Testament he translated yet and the new. "But God has given me time and health, so I'm still"! is his motto, which makes it another patient courage, if they believe that it goes no further. His injury he sees it as a chance to do something really important. His life has got a meaning.
